Ep. 71 Climbing Over Bodies

This week on The Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we’re summiting the tallest mountain in the world, Mt. Everest. Ok so, we’re not actually climbing the mammoth mountain, but we’re discussing many people who have.

What makes a person want to take on such an extreme and deadly venture? We don’t have all the answers, but we sure can speculate.

Not all who attempt to reach the top of Mt. Everest make it back down safely. In fact, there are hundreds of bodies scattered along the ridge lines, many of which are visible to climbers as they make their way up.

Tune in as we talk about this perilous section of the mountain known as “the dead zone” and the mindset necessary for trekking past the frozen corpses of those who climbed before you.

Stick around to the end of this week’s episode as we examine the parallels between the behavior of Everest climbers and the endless “freedumb fighters” of the pandemic.  Their similarities are striking, considering both are hell-bent on reaching the top even if it means climbing over bodies.

Ep. 69 Nice!

This week on the Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we’re paying tribute to all things “69” in celebration of releasing our 69^th episode.

That’s right. We’ve turned out an incredible 69 (Nice!) episodes and we couldn’t be prouder. And what better way to say “Good job, Snowflakes!” than by sharing some interesting, unusual and somewhat cringe-worthy facts about the number 69?

For example, do you know which country boasts the only skyscraper built with 69 floors? Or how about which U.S. city is 69^th in population size? Better yet, what does the Kama Sutra call the position known as “69-ing” (and why are crows involved)?

Ep. 68 Humorous Headlines

This week on the Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we’ve hand selected some of our favorite national news headlines from this week to share with our fantastic listeners. In case you didn’t notice, this week’s news was exceptional in the world of irony and absurdity—to the point that we found ourselves laughing out loud on several occasions and realized we simply HAD to talk about it.

From the US military losing a stealth jet in the China sea (oops?), to Governor Jim Justice of West Virginia telling Bette Midler to kiss his dog’s ass, to Florida issuing a winter warning for flying frozen iguanas, this week was absolutely filled to the brim with stories that made us wonder whether The Onion had become real life.

By the way, North Carolina’s disgraced former Governor, Pat McCrory, is back in headlines and he’s just as delusional now as he was in 2016 when he tried to make us all show our junk to use public restrooms.

Ep. 67 Am I Homophobic?

This week on the Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we’re getting honest with ourselves and our listeners. Why? Because sometimes the hardest conversations are the most needed. We invite you to listen and to start a conversation of your own. 

This episode was inspired by the MTV show “Catfish”...well, sort of. We happen to be huge fans of the show and were recently made aware of our own internal biases while trying to choose which episodes to watch.

The average person might hold the same biases we do, but they may never pause to question them. Luckily for us (and you), we’re anything but average.  

Tune in to hear what exactly transpired during our “Catfish” episode search and to hear an honest conversation as we try to answer the question, “Am I homophobic?”

Ep. 66 Just Andrew Now

This week on the Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we’re filing a petition to replace the Diddler of York, Prince Andrew---with ourselves. Can we do a better job of being the Queen’s son than Andy? Does a Sasquatch shit in the woods? Obviously.

Longtime listeners of our show know that we have a deep appreciation for all things British and that we’ve been on a quest for knighthood for a few years now. Since Prince Andrew was recently stripped of his military titles and royal patronage by his own mom, we figure now is our chance to act. Surely the Queen will hear us out.

That said, a little investigative work on our end has uncovered the need for us, the Carolina Snowflakes, to become British citizens.  Tune in to hear what steps we’ll be taking to make this happen. No doubt you’ll enjoy listening to our quintessentially American opinions on how to get around some of the more demanding and excessive requirements of UK immigration laws. We’re a shoo-in, no worries.

Lastly, stick around to hear our answers to the UK Citizenry Test. Every prospective new resident of the UK must pass the test in order to officially become a British citizen. Will we pass? Will we be able to make our case to the Queen to replace her loathsome son? Tune in to find out!

Ep. 65 Our Time Capsule Episode

This week on the Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we’re exploring the exciting and historically nerdy world of time capsules. The vessels meant to house our most precious artifacts sometimes yield unexpected surprises once opened decades down the road.

Such was the case with the recent discovery of 2 confederate-era time capsules extracted from a gigantic Robert E. Lee monument in Richmond last month. What was found within the 2 time capsules was not what historians expected. Tune in to hear how the 2 boxes were located, why 1 was perhaps an epic troll by the monument creators, and what each contained.

Then stick around to hear an unusual story about a time capsule in a car buried in 1957 by the residents of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Things didn’t quite go as planned when the time capsule car was unearthed 50 years later in 2007, but it made for an entertaining story nonetheless. Those Tulsans have a sense of humor.

And lastly, stick around to hear what we, the Carolina Snowflakes, would place in a time capsule of our own. What do we think most represents the era and climate we’re living in? And what would we want our future selves to remember about the important moments in our recent history?

Ep. 64 Political Holi-Daze

This week on the Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we’re cooking up a storm with our unique mix of political chatter and Holiday celebrations. Yes, combining politics with the holidays is akin to mixing oil and water, but if anyone can do it, we can.

First, join us as we check in with former Chief of Staff (and our former congressman), Mark Meadows. The guy is in deep doo with Congress, the DOJ and even former President Trump -- and we’re here for it. How did the guy who once represented our neck of the woods get himself in such a mess? We’ll tell you all about it!

Then stick around as we hash out the good, the bad and the ugly of 2021 as we do a political year in review. And what good would looking backwards be if we didn’t also look to the future? Hear our predictions on what we think is going to go down in 2022.

Lastly, we wrap up this entertaining episode with a segment called “If Santa was a Republican”. Tune in to hear what we think Christmas would look like if old Saint Nick was a MAGA-voting member of the GOP. Be ready to laugh your fuzzy socks off!

Ep. 63 Tik Tok Tech Talk

This week on the Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we’re going deep into the trenches of the rapidly growing social media app, Tik Tok. This episode could also be called “Tik Tok for old people” and in this case, we are the old people.

It’s safe to say we learned a lot during this deep dive and we’re here to share our hilariously engaging bounty of knowledge. We’re also here to answer very important questions. Such as, how has this video sharing app grown to nearly the size of Facebook in only 3 years of existence? Something that took Zuckerberg nearly a decade to achieve is now within reach of Tik Tok’s parent company, Bytedance.

Also, given that Tik Tok is the most popular Chinese-owned social media app in the U.S. what are the implications for privacy protections afforded to American citizens? In a rare moment of bipartisan unity, both sides of congress have agreed that the app poses potential risks. 

Tune in to hear what these risks are, plus a brief history of how the social media app began and the tactics deployed to keep its young users hooked.
